Welcome to AD5508 The Illustrator

This module is designed to enable students to analyse and investigate different genres of Illustration practice, and to define and contextualise the applied aspects of Illustration and provide a context for their own emerging practice. Examples of genre will include sequential/comics artists, children's book illustrators, concept artists and political cartoonists. 


The module will be delivered primarily as a series of seminars, with supporting materials supplied through interactive and audio-visual media and a dedicated blog. Film and animation clips, Skype interviews with practising illustrators and guest speakers will form part of the activities. Help, support and guidance on the completion of the assignment will be provided.


MODULE AIMS


To provide students with:


The ability to relate their own emerging practice with that of current practitioners 


Insight into the historical, cultural and social contexts and purposes of illustrative applications 


An understanding of the contemporary illustrator's economic, social and ethical roles (e.g. entrepreneur, publisher, commentator) 


An expanded frame of reference when defining illustration practice and its applications in the wider media.
